N+1 Kryptonite
Next Generation Control of Your Single Use Supply Chain Today
Partnering with Catalyst Group GmbH and Treas Engineering, N+1 is excited to offer customers full control of their irradiation supply chain needs with N+1 Kryptonite.
N+1 and our partners wanted to provide the biotech and food and beverage industry with a more cost effective and environmentally sustainable fully end user controlled solution for irradiation. Using our rapidly deployable core and conveyor modules the system is designed with improved economics, and freedom for customer adjustments for streamlined workflow integration into an existing manufacturing or distribution warehouse. The rapidly deployable modules also allow for a streamlined build process eliminating the traditional expense and permanent in place bunkers of the past.
This presentation proposes a fundamental shift to an end-user-controlled, just-in-time (JIT) irradiation model. Leveraging the demonstrated comparability of X-ray and E-beam sterilization for pre-use irradiation applications, manufacturers can now deploy rapidly deployable, modular irradiation systems directly into their commercial warehouses.
This technical transition enables:
Supply Chain Resiliency: Manufacturers source non-irradiated SUMs with a 2.5x increase in shelf life, significantly reducing waste.
Operational Flexibility: Materials can be modified and assembled prior to JIT sterilization.
Environmental Sustainability: Shifting the primary irradiation drive to electricity, which can be sourced from environmentally sustainable suppliers.
Financial Impact: Near-complete elimination of the hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars annual waste stream.
The JIT model offers a path to reshape supply chain inefficiencies, improve sustainability, and fundamentally lower the holistic cost of biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
Key Supply Chain and Financial Benefits
Cost Reduction: Eliminate the 30-50% Gamma irradiation markup by sourcing non-irradiated single-use materials (SUMs) at baseline pricing.
Inventory Optimization: Reduce lead times by 3–4 weeks and decrease warehouse carrying costs by up to 40% through JIT stocking models.
Waste Elimination: Functionally eliminate the hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars annual waste stream by controlling the start of the post-sterilization expiry clock. Non-irradiated SUMs have a ≥2.5x increased shelf life and can be repurposed or resold.
Increased Flexibility: Gain the ability to modify or assemble SUMs right up to the point of use, enabling greater agility in manufacturing processes.
Technical and Sustainability Advantages
Enhanced Resiliency: Reduce total reliance on the lead times and capacity constraints of the external Gamma irradiation supply chain.
Sustainable Power: Shift the primary irradiation drive to electricity, enabling better offset through sustainable power generation sources.
Proven Technology: Leverage modular X-ray and E-beam systems—technologies with a 30+ year history in industrial applications—which have been extensively validated and shown to be comparable to Gamma for sterilizing SUMs.
